In the end of January 2014 the BHP concluded installation of the three solar-fridges donated by private Danish donors. This equipment will allow Belem Health Center and the Maternity wards at Hospital Simao Mendes and Hospital Militar in Bissau to store vaccines and medication in a more adequate and sustainable way.
In the beginning of 2013 Team Nibe-Bissau came to Bissau after having crossed half the world by firetruck. The firetruck contained several donation goods - among others, 100 kg Lego to the SOS village in Bissau. Team Nibe-Bissau also donated three solar fridges to be used to store cold goods at the health centres. The fridges arrived half a year later with the annual Bandim Health Project container transporting necessary study materials and other donated goods from Denmark to Bissau.
After several meetings with representatives from the National Board of Health in Bissau and the health centres/hospitals in Bissau it was decided to place one fridge in Belem Health Centre, one at Simao Mendes National Hospital and one at Hospital Militar, all situated in Bissau city. The fridges were installed in the end of January. Maintenance contract has been made with the local authorities to ensure the longevity and well-functioning of the fridges.
The fridges are now functioning where they are most needed, helping ensure that vaccines and their life saving benefits are provided to more children.
